Make a Lasting Contribution to Protect Fisheries and Watersheds

Many of our members have chosen to name the Association of Northwest Steelheaders in their will or estate plan. No matter the size of the gift, a bequest ensures that you will have a positive, lasting impact on salmon and steelhead for generations to come. A gift to ANWS in your will or revocable trust proclaims your confidence that we will continue to serve our mission and make a difference for our fisheries, watersheds, wild places and future generations.

Four easy ways you can become a philanthropist for steelhead and salmon:

1.) Make a gift to ANWS in your will or trust. Find out how easy it is to put steelhead advocacy in your plans.
2.) Make ANWS a beneficiary of your retirement plan. You can consider full, partial or percentage options to benefit education or habitat conservation.
3.) Consider a gift of life insurance that your family has “outgrown” or make ANWS a partial or full beneficiary of your plan.
4.) Build your gift by using real estate and personal property.

Our staff can help you design a gift that will work for you, your loved ones, and fisheries and watershed conservation here in the Pacific Northwest. If you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Chris Hager, our Executive Director, at chager@anws.org or (603) 770-2175.

Types of Bequests

Specific Bequest

Naming ANWS as the beneficiary of a specific amount or asset ensures priority status.
“I devise to Association of Northwest Steelheaders (federal tax ID #91-1031100), located in Milwaukie, OR, or to its legal successor organization, the sum of $________ [or identify a specific asset] to be used for its general purposes.”

Residual Bequest

A Residual Bequest comes to NCWF after your estate expenses and specific bequests are paid.
“I devise to Association of Northwest Steelheaders (federal tax ID #91-1031100), located in Milwaukie, OR, or to its legal successor organization, all [or ___%] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general purposes."

Contingent Bequest

ANWS can be named to receive a bequest if one or more of your specific bequests cannot be fulfilled.
“If [insert name] is not living at the time of my death, I devise to Association of Northwest Steelheaders (federal tax ID #91-1031100), located in Milwaukie, OR, or to its legal successor organization, the sum of $_____ [or all, or ___% of the residue, of my estate] to be used for its general purposes.”

Retirement Plans

You may name ANWS as a beneficiary of a retirement plan such as a 401(k), 403(b), IRA, Keogh or profit sharing pension plan. These plans are typically subject to both income taxes and estate taxes, but when naming a charity like ANWS as beneficiary, we pay no income tax and your estate gets a 100% charitable deduction for estate tax purposes. Simply request a change of beneficiary form from your plan administrator to designate all, a specific dollar amount, or a percentage to:
“Association of Northwest Steelheaders (federal tax ID #91-1031100), located in Milwaukie, OR, or to its legal successor organization for its general purposes.”
Certain plans require a spousal waiver.
