The Association of Northwest Steelheaders recently hosted another successful Spring Chinook Plunking Clinic—bringing together anglers of all experience levels for a hands-on, welcoming day on the water.

The event has been led by Brian West of the NW Steelheaders Tualatin Valley Chapter since 2019, and supported by a major cast of NW Steelheaders, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Angler Education Staff. The event is consistently a major draw for anglers across Oregon and Southwest Washington looking to learn a new skill.

Held under classic spring conditions at Sauvie Island, the event highlighted what makes these clinics so valuable: practical learning, strong community, and a shared passion for fishing. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers ensured everything ran smoothly. From organizing food and coordinating gear to assembling plunking rigs and securing rods, reels, and weights, the effort reflected a true group commitment. Donations from local vendors and supporters added to the experience, helping fund raffles and provide participants with quality gear.

Participants received instruction in the fundamentals of plunking—a uniquely effective technique for targeting salmon and steelhead—while also gaining confidence setting up rigs, reading water, and fishing from shore. For many, it was their first exposure to the method; for others, a chance to refine their skills alongside knowledgeable mentors.

Beyond the fishing itself, the clinic emphasized connection. Attendees were welcomed as new members of the Steelheaders community and encouraged to stay engaged through local chapters, fish-alongs, and future events. Opportunities to volunteer as mentors or instructors were also highlighted, helping ensure the next generation of anglers continues to grow.

One attendee captured the spirit of the day perfectly, noting the event was “welcoming, well organized, and thoughtful,” and praising the professionalism and enthusiasm of volunteers and partners from ANWS, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife(ODFW) and the Oregon State Police(OSP). Their takeaway was simple: a fun, educational outing that showcased the very best of Oregon’s outdoor community.

Clinics like the Bill Sherwood Memorial Plunking Clinic are about more than just fishing—they’re about building skills, fostering stewardship, and strengthening the community that supports our fisheries.
