The Steelheaders Film Festival returned this year with an evening that celebrated the passion, community, and conservation ethic that define the Association of Northwest Steelheaders. This year’s festival featured two films highlighting indigenous stories, connections to waterways and what can happen when we work together to restore free flowing rivers.

NEW EVENT: Steelhead 101 w/ Tualatin Valley Chapter February 28th
Sportsman's Warehouse 10645 Northeast Tanasbourne Dr, Hillsboro, OR 97124
Have you ever wanted to try steelhead fishing but weren’t sure how? Association of Northwest Steelheaders (ANWS) partners with ODFW to provide all the knowledge you need to fish for steelhead from scratch; from where to go, how to read the water, and what gear to get and how to use it! We will focus on the use of conventional (spinning) fishing methods and gear, but if you have questions about other fishing methods, such as fly-fishing, we're happy to help. This is a 2-day event! Day 1 covers the ins and outs of steelhead fishing in a classroom setting, while Day 2 is all about hands-on learning and fishing (!!) on the water. A detailed email with the daily plan and further instructions will be sent to all registrants the week before the event date.

Once you’ve finished the Steelhead 101 clinic, it’s time to put those skills to work! Join us for our March Fish-Along on the coast. This is our favorite way to bridge the gap between learning and catching, as seasoned members and 101 graduates team up for a weekend of fishing. We’ll be staying at the Tillamook 4-H dorms at the fairgrounds(optional), making it easy to hit the river early and share tips over dinner. It’s a fun, social environment and the best way to gain real-world experience on the water.

NW Steelheaders volunteers share the fundamentals of fishing so that families can go forth and explore the Pacific Northwest confidently and responsibly. A Sandy River Steelhead 101 student with their first Large Scale sucker! If you catch a sucker, show it the respect you would any prized fish and carefully release it back into the river. These fish are a common bycatch when targeting salmon and steelhead. While often mistaken for invasive carp, they are actually a native species and a critical part of the food chain. Large scale suckers feed on aquatic invertebrates and plant material. They are an important part of the diet of fish-eating animals (such as osprey, eagles, river otters, and other fish).
