Steelheaders is deeply committed to serving our veterans. Our River Ambassador Program is a is a two-part program consisting of two three-day immersive fishing adventures a year and at least 10 one-day fishing trips a year offered to wounded active duty miliary. The first day of the three-day adventure focuses on instruction, the second day on hands-on experience, and the third day is a guided drift fishing trip down a river. The first day consists of six different classes, 50 minutes per class. The second day involves utilizing those learned techniques via casting ponds and bank fishing. The third day is river float trip followed by awards ceremony. In 2013, we expanded the program to take wounded veterans on informal, one-day fishing trips on the Columbia River, Willamette River, Tillamook Bay, or off the Oregon Coast.
Fishing provides an alternate means of therapy for soldiers returning from combat with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, and/or physical disabilities. RAP events give veterans a stress free, nonmedical environment to help them cope with the stressors of returning to civilian life, value the natural environment, and to provide them with a tool (angling) to utilize in the future should problems occur.
